Check our Our Trailer for Plastic versus Planet
Join us at the Nature Center (7030 Garrison St) on Saturday, April 20 from 10 am to noon for a morning of free, family fun! Dive into “plastic versus planet” with interactive booths, trash clean up contest drawing, and family activities–drawing winner gets a free rain barrel. Pro Tip: If you bike or walk to the event, you can get an extra drawing ticket! Bike corral provided by Bike Friendly Arvada.
Rain Barrel Drawing
Show your appreciation for our Earth by collecting trash! Visit our drawing table to get a bag to pick up trash from around the park–each bag is a ticket into the rain barrel drawing. The drawing table will have volunteers to help guide you to trash hotspots in the park, but anywhere where there are trash cans or trails are typically great spots to pick up items from plastic wrappers, bottles, napkins, or other waste.
We will have nitrile gloves available and limited grabbers available for folks that can’t bend over.
Don't forget microplastics
VIDEO: What are microplastics? Here’s what you need to know in less than a minute. (Source: oceanservice.noaa.gov)
Microplastics can be microscopic, but they don’t have to be. Any plastic smaller than a pencil eraser is a piece of “micro-trash” and can easily sink to the ground between grasses and shrubs. Common examples are cigarette butts, plastic fibers from clothing, or broken plastic pieces.
Poster Contest
Students can submit a poster for the chance to win a free tree planting at their Arvada school or Arvada Park of choice. Poster submissions can be entered into two categories, Kinders-6th grade or 7th-12th grade. Please see all poster guidelines for the best chance at winning the poster contest:
- Posters should be on 12 x 18 paper; any art medium can be used
- Posters must be themed to encourage stewardship behaviors to reduce plastic pollution.
- Inappropriate language or graphics will automatically disqualify a poster and will not be displayed.
- Posters MUST have student, grade & Arvada school name credits, (list nearest school to your home if you are homeschooled or online).
- Include a contact email/phone on the back for winners to schedule tree planting.
- Posters can be dropped off at Majestic View or submitted virtually via scan or photo sent to majesticviewnc@arvada.org. Posters can also be mailed, but only posters that are received prior to 4/20 will be eligible for review to win.
- All submitted posters will be featured at the Nature Center on Earth Day and the best 10 will be featured on the website for the remaining school year.
- Majestic View will announce the winning poster at the Earth Day Celebration on 4/20 (winner does not need to be present to be eligible win, but must schedule their tree planting by May 3).
